Fur is Dead Protests Spread to Portland!

Portland, Oregon is considered one of the hippest cities in America. No surprise then that its cutting-edge citizens are out and about promoting the world’s biggest fashion trend: fur-free.

Call it Compassionate PDX!

On Saturday, August 28th, 2021, animal rights protesters converged on one of Portland’s upscale retail stores chanting: fur is dead! The demonstrators loudly demanded the establishment stop selling fur asap!  Protesters say this is one of the last shops in #Portland that still has the increasingly controversial product on its racks. Our contributor, Dani Rukin, attempted to enter the store to ask management for comment and hear their side, but the store had the entrance locked with security guarding the doors. And, it’s all caught on tape. You can watch the video at the bottom of this story. Store representatives are invited on any time to comment and respond to the protesters.

The Biggest Names in Fashion Have Agreed to Stop Selling Fur

Animal rights activists the world over have been emboldened by a flurry of victories by groups like PETA. In domino fashion, label after label and department store after department store have announced they will no longer carry fur, although some of the retailers/brands have set a date in the relatively near future to allow the clearing out of inventory.  It’s become such a trend that, in the summer of 2021, People Magazine published a list of the brands who’ve thrown in the fur towel, declaring, “The hottest trend in fashion right now is going fur-free.”

The People Magazine List

People’s list of going or gone fur-free includes Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Versace, Michael Kors, Gucci, Nordstrom, Prada, Burberry, Versace, Gucci, Canada Goose, and Armani.  Calvin Klein was way ahead of the pack, making the leap to compassion in 1994, followed by Vivienne Westwood, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger in 2007. Stella McCartney has never used real fur.  Add to that fur-free list, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Alexander McQueen, and Balenciaga. And, the cherry on top? Tom Ford has even gone vegan! Wow.

The Mink Massacre!

The list just keeps on growing, accelerated by the pandemic, which resulted in millions of mink being messily massacred in Denmark when some of the animals got Covid. The minks’ bloated bodies then began rising en masse from their shallow graves, giving rise to the phrase, “zombie animals.” Critics say that widely reported horror story robbed the product of any last vestiges of glamour to which it may have been clinging. To many fashionistas, it was all suddenly… gross.

Anti-fur demonstrations often have a few dogs present, to remind shoppers that foxes and minks are not that different from your dogs or cats.
