A VEGAN AREPAS RECIPE THAT WILL ROCK YOUR WORLD!
Venezuelan vegan arepas are what’s on the menu today. Everyone needs to know about this arepas recipe! Our Chefs of the day are vegan justice activist Crash Barbosa, (he/him) and Albert Lopez, an editor for the visualization company Halon Entertainment. Together they team up in the kitchen to show us step by step how to make this awesome and delicious meal. Let’s take a look!

“Crash Barbosa is a political activist, rapper, writer, and actor. Born in New York and raised in Los Angeles, Crash started writing poetry at a young age. When he turned 18 years old, Crash turned down an offer from Columbia University after realizing his morals didn’t align with many educational institutions and decided to focus on building himself. Over the span of his career, Crash has been an outspoken political activist and mental health advocate. By working in film/music and having family ties to the Hollywood scene, Crash is fully immersed when it comes to understanding the entertainment industry.
Crash is partnered with UREG Def Jam Memphis while producing 2 series and a show with Jezrel White from Reelxpozure, and Albert Lopez. Early on, Crash decided to use his platform and large following/fan base and focus on changing the world. While only speaking truth to the masses, Crash stands behind his words, his politics, and his character.”

After graduating from the Academy of Art University in 2008, Albert Lopez went on to work for advertising giant Goodby, Silverstein & Partners from 2009-2010. Following this, Albert’s next job was working as an editorial assistant with Walt Disney Motion Pictures from 2010-2012 on the film, “John Carter”; in which Albert had the privilege of working directly with multiple Academy Award-winning filmmakers at Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, CA.
During his time as a freelance editor in 2013, Albert edited the music video, “Knock Down Drag Out”, for the legendary Sammy Hagar. In early 2014, Albert’s short film “Love Hurts”, which he both directed and edited, went on to win awards at the Urban Action Showcase in NYC and in LA at the Asians on Film festival; as well as receiving awards in Long Beach, Oakland and Albert’s home state of Oklahoma.
From 2014 to 2015, Albert worked in the editorial department of Chris Columbus’ 1492 Pictures in San Francisco on the Sony/Columbia production of “Pixels”, until Summer 2015; when Albert made the move from the Bay Area to Los Angeles.
While in LA, Albert has explored opportunities as a freelance Editor for several new media companies such as Defy Media, Awesomeness TV and, Legendary Digital. In 2015 and 2016, Albert had a few videos from his YouTube Channel go viral; his highest reaching over 1.6 million views. He’s collaborated with television stars to create a series of comedy sketch passion projects; several of which have been featured on the home page of FunnyOrDie.com.
Recently, Albert has managed to bring his favorite hobby of miniature painting into the limelight; painting miniatures for the web series “Starter Kit” as well as being a featured guest on the season finale of “Painter’s Guild” for GeekandSundry in late 2017.
Since the summer of 2018, Albert has been editing for the visualization company, Halon Entertainment in Santa Monica CA, where he continues to work to this day.
THE AREPAS RECIPE YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR
This arepas recipe consists of white corn flour, sea salt, avocado oil, and water. The batter makes patties, the patties are cooked, opened like pockets or like a traditional burger bun, and then filled with whatever ingredients you like. Albert and Crash filled theirs with vegan meat, vegan cheese, black beans, sautéed veggies, and avocado. These little heavenly bites are so flavorful and super simple to make. So bring a little Venezuelan twist to your next meal and give these a try.
- 2 cups of PAN brand white corn flour
- 2 cups of warm water
- salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon of avocado or olive oil
- 1 mixing bowl mix ingredients by hand
- 1 side bowl of water and oil mix
- OUR FIXINGS:
- -plant based meat with taco seasoning hand-rubbed
- -dairy-free mozzarella cheese
- -red onion red bell pepper and mushrooms sauteed in red wine
- -fresh sliced tomatoes
- -fresh sliced avocado
- -fresh sprouts
- -hot sauce
- -warm the water on the stove, not too hot to touch
- -add salt and oil to water
- -stir by hand while pouring the corn flour into the bowl
- -keep hands oiled with side bowl ingredients while mixing
- -form arepa batter into billiard sized balls
- -cook in arepera or in a cast iron pan for 20 to 25 minutes
- -serve when crispy on the outside, soft on the inside
- -slice horizontal to create a "burger bun" or "biscuit"
- -*alternatively, you can slice vertical to create two "half-pockets"
- -butter, stuff and serve with whatever ingredients you like
