Humanity’s Destructive Behavior

AT CURRENT RATES OF DECLINE, 100% of WILD VERTEBRATES WILL DIE OFF BY
YEAR ZERO : 2026

LPR2014 reported that 52% of wild vertebrates died between 1970 and 2010. From 1970 to 2010, both human population and human per-capita consumption roughly doubled so that human impact on the planet increased by a factor of 3.84. If we extrapolate an exponential curve that has increased by a factor of 3.84 from 1970 to 2010 to determine when 100% of wild vertebrates would die off, the answer is around 2026. This calculation was corroborated when LPR2016 reported that 58% of wild vertebrates died between 1970 and 2012. Thus, even with just a linear extrapolation, at an additional 3% rate of decline per year, 100% of wild vertebrates will die off by YEAR ZERO : 2026.

ONLY 7% OF THE LAND AREA OF THE PLANET IS UNUSED FORESTS

Please see Figure 11.9, Page 836, in Chapter 11 of Working Group 3 in the Fifth Assessment Report of the United Nations (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Unused Forest area is just 11 MKm2 out of 148 MKm2.

HUMANS USE 31% OF THE LAND AREA OF THE PLANET FOR GRAZING FARMED ANIMALS

Please see Figure 11.9, Page 836, in Chapter 11 of Working Group 3 in the Fifth Assessment Report of the United Nations (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Humans use 46 MKm2 out of 148 MKm2 for grazing farmed animals.

HUMANS USE 20% OF THE LAND AREA OF THE PLANET FOR MANAGED FORESTRY

Please see Figure 11.9, Page 836, in Chapter 11 of Working Group 3 in the Fifth Assessment Report of the United Nations (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Humans use 30 MKm2 out of 148 MKm2 for managed forestry.

HUMAN BIOMASS TODAY IS MORE THAN DOUBLE THE BIOMASS OF ALL WILD MEGAFAUNA FROM 10,000 YEARS AGO

Please see A. Barnosky, “Megafauna Biomass Tradeoff as a Driver of Quaternary and Future Extinctions,” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vo 105, Suppl. 1, August 2008. The biomass of 7.5 Billion humans today works out to approximately 500 Million metric tons. The biomass of all wild megafauna from 10K years ago is estimated to be 200 Million metric tons.

HUMANS EXTRACT FIVE TIMES AS MUCH FOOD FROM THE EARTH FOR FARMED ANIMALS THAN FOR THEMSELVES

Please see Figure 11.9, Page 836, in Chapter 11 of Working Group 3 in the Fifth Assessment Report of the United Nations (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Our farmed animals consume 7.27 Gigatons of dry matter biomass annually versus the 1.54 Gigatons that we consume.

HUMANS SLAUGHTERED 70 (74) BILLION LAND ANIMALS IN 2014 (2016)

Statistics accessed from United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) on Apr. 6, 2018.
