WHY DO PROTESTERS SAY THE NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER HAS BLOOD ON ITS HANDS?

JaneUnChained cameras were there for a loud, confrontation filled, demonstration at the New York Blood Center’s offices on Manhattan’s East Side. The uproar follows a widely condemned decision by the New York Blood Center to stop paying for the care and feeding of 66 chimpanzees, part of a colony of chimps it used for biomedical research for 30 years.  The chimps are languishing on islands in Liberia unable to care for themselves. Demonstrators, led by documentary filmmaker and Their Turn journalist Donny Moss, refused to leave the lobby of the NYBC Thursday, June 18th, accusing the NYBC of cruelty.

The Humane Society of the US urges you to write a letter to the NYBC’s President, which you can do by clicking here.
The New York Times reports that an expert sent to check on the chimps found them “without water,” noting there is “no fresh water on the islands and the water system had broken down.” The Humane Society of the United States has stepped in with money for food and repairs and the caretakers are working for free for the time being. The NYBC refused to offer JaneUnChained a statement despite numerous requests made on camera. The demonstrators say their campaign is just starting.  Video edited by Donna Dennison.

This is a story I just can’t understand. How can the New York Blood center think it is okay to just drop these chimps off on an island, with no natural food or water, abandoning them. The same chimps they used in experimentation for 30 years. I just don’t understand the thinking. The inhumane behavior. And the unethical behavior and judgment.

  • Bless you, Jane and Donna, for covering this story. I’m so sorry I wasn’t able to attend the demo. I’ve been booked up all week with doctor appointments. But I’ll be at future demos. You can count on that.

  • Shame on the New York Blood Center and any company that supports them. I thought that center was about saving lives. What they have done does not represent the values for compassion and life.

  • Please do something to make the Blood bank pay for what they have done. That way the money can be used to take care, feed and give these Chimps a pleasent life.
“Our father who art in heaven!”

  • The very Least that should be done is to humanely protect these special creatures.
