WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S TRENDING ON MANHATTAN'S UPPER WEST SIDE?

ORGANIZERS VOW: THIS IS THE START OF A CAMPAIGN!
Residents of Manhattan’s Upper West Side are demanding a new pet store in their neighborhood stop selling dogs and cats, saying every time someone buys a pet, a shelter animal is robbed of a home and often gets killed. Check out the video below! The store owner told me on the phone that she was on vacation and could not comment. I left my contact information inviting her to share her side any time. The demonstrators say they will continue their campaign in the hopes the store will stop all animal sales and, instead, offer shelter dogs and cats for adoption. Meanwhile, you won’t believe what was going on right next door! (Edited by Donna Dennison)

About 3 million dogs and cats are killed in animal shelters every year in the U.S. for lack of homes.

  • I think it’s awesome that Ms. Velez-Mitchell is raising awareness about this important issue. Why would you ever buy a pet from a shop when there already are so many waiting for a loving home in shelters? Moral of the story: #adoptdontbuy

  • Bravo, Jane, bravo! Thank you for drawing attention to these money-grabbing businesses. Millions of dogs and cats are euthanized every year for lack of a home, but pet stores perpetuate the mill industry, that churns out animals like widgets.

  • Bless you, Jane, for trying to help shelter animals find loving forever homes. My two dachshunds are rescues and so were their two predecessors. I’ve also taken in many rescue birds. Rescue is the way to go!

  • With so many wonderful, loving animals of all ages, sizes, and personalities waiting in shelters for someone to adopt them, why on earth would anyone buy a manufactured animal from a breeder? Two paws up to these kind souls for speaking up for animals in shelters!

  • I have always rescued my animals and will never understand why someone would support breeders with so many loving animals dying for lack of good homes. If you’re ready to share your life with an animal, adopt, don’t shop!
